About This Challenge
In Mining Expedition, students take on the role of young explorers searching for valuable energy resources. In this simulated environment, participants program and control robots to detect, extract, and collect mysterious minerals.
This challenge combines robotics, strategy, and problem-solving in an engaging mission that builds real-world STEM skills.
What You Will Do
- Design and build a competition robot
- Program autonomous and manual movements
- Detect and release mineral elements
- Collect and transport blocks to scoring zones
- Optimize performance within the time limit
How Scoring Works
Teams earn points by completing tasks during each match:
- Points for each element released from platforms
- Points for collecting elements into the collection zone
- Points for completing battery replacement tasks
- Bonus points for smooth runs with fewer retries
Final rankings are based on total accumulated points across all runs.
Game Strategy
Success in this competition requires planning and adaptability:
- Efficient robot design for precise movements
- Smart programming for autonomous phase (first 60 seconds)
- Effective transition to manual control
- Time management and quick decision-making
Robot Requirements
- Maximum size: 30 × 30 × 30 cm at start
- Maximum 4 motors allowed
- Powered by onboard battery (max 5V)
- No external power sources allowed
Competition Format
Each match lasts 180 seconds:
- 0–60 seconds: Fully autonomous phase
- 60–180 seconds: Manual or assisted control
Teams complete multiple runs, and all scores are combined to determine final rankings.
